Trip Blankets

Just over 2 years ago I started "Trip Blankets" for the kids, D and I.  Ok they aren't just trip blankets but special event blankets.  The deal is every trip, birthday, move, first day of school, birth, etc. we take turns picking out a skein of sock yarn to make blanket squares with.  I shouldn't say square either because only Z has actual squares.  All the blanket blocks are made using size 3 needles and sock yarn.

I spent most of the day today trying to catch up on my pieces and seaming of the blankets.  I am about 14 squares short of being caught up.  I am short 2 of D's, and 3 of everyone elses and I still need to finish seaming mine.  What is left of the skein is what I use to make everyones Christmas and just because socks.  So all of the socks that I am making for Christmas have matching squares in everyones blankets.  But here is how they look so far...

I will start with D's because he is oldest.  His is called Sock Yarn Blanket by Shelly Kang and the pattern is free here.  It has 55 diamonds so far and 2 more to make to be caught up.

Next will be mine.  The pattern is called Hexagon by Jen Reilly and the pattern is free here.  I do the outside in version.  I still have to make 3 more to be caught up and 6 of the ones in the pic are just pinned on.  So currently mine has 54 hexagons.

In the middle is K.  His is called Apple Core Blanket by Frankie Brown and it is also free here.  His has 44 apple cores all seamed together and I still have 3 more to make for a total of 47.

G is well...all boy.  His is called A Recipe for Fish by April Broken which is...free here.  He has 46 fish all seamed together so far and 3 more to be made and added.  We have taken a couple of day trips with just G while K was at his summer program so G has 2 more than K.

Bringing up the rear is little Z.  Hers is called Sock Yarn Square by Shannon Geddes and believe it or not it is free here.  Z has just 16 squares but that is not bad for being less than a year old she has tons of time to catch up.  She is short 3 squares like the boys and I.  We have done some trips with just Z while the boys have been with their dad so I figure it is just a matter of time until she passes them.

Mine is my favorite but I am partial to it because it is mine.  If I couldn't choose mine I pick Z's.  Everyone else picks their own as well so I guess it doesn't matter.

Which is your favorite?

What special thing do you do to remember spacial events/trips?

  1. These blankets are really cool. I've never heard of these, and I think it's an awesome idea. I like that each is different, too. Great job!
