Rosca de Reyes

I am not quite sure what Rosca de Reyes is but I know that it is worth 20 points extra credit in K's Spanish class.

Three King's Cake (or bread) is closely allied with the traditions around the Epiphany (January 6th). This date commemorates the visit the Three Wise Men made to the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. In Mexico, the day is a gift-giving holiday. Tradition states this bread be served, garnished with the "jewels" of fruit and nuts. Usually a small clay or porcelain doll is baked inside. The custom is that whoever finds the doll must give a party on Candlemas (February 2nd).

So yup we are buying K's Spanish Grade.  He is sitting at a B in that class so he doesn't seriously need it but why not give this thing a try.

So here is the recipe we were given.

For the bread
1/2 cup whole milk
5 1/2 Tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
2 4x1-inch strips of orange zest (use a vegetable peeler; avoid the white pith)
1 Tbsp orange juice
3 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 3/4 tsp active dry yeast
3 1/2 cups (15 3/4 oz) all-purpose flour; more as needed
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
Vegetable oil, as needed

For the topping
4 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
1/4 sugar
Raisins and other dried fruit

1.  Put the milk, butter, and orange zest in a small saucepan, over medium heat; stir until the butter melts.  Remove from the heat and let cool until warm.  Discard the orange zest, add the orange juice, and whisk in the eggs.

2.  Dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup lukewarm water and let stand until the mixture bubbles slightly 5 to 10 minutes.  If the yeast doesn't bubble, discard it and start again with new yeast.

3.  Mix the flour, sugar, and salt on a work surface, or a really large bowl.  Make a well in the center.  Gradually pour the yeast mixture and the milk mixture into the well while mixing with your hand.  Knead on a lightly floured work surface until you have a nice, uniform dough, about 10 minutes.  The dough should be smooth but still slightly sticky.  If it seems too sticky, add more flour as needed.

4.  Put the dough in a large, lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a towel, and leave in a warm place (about 70 degrees) until doubled in size, 1-1 1/2 hours.

SHAPING THE BREAD
Divide the dough in half and shape the pieces on a lightly floured surface into two rounds.  Place each round on a lightly oiled baking sheet.   Poke your fist through the middle of each round, and shape each into a ring.  Decorate each ring with raisins and other dried fruits.  Cover loosely with a cloth or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 45 minutes.

Here is where K and D started making their own.

Shaping

Adding the dried fruit

D went for a symmetrical pretty looking bread.

K well...K is a 14 year old boy who just wanted to get stuff on it and be done with it so...

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Bake until the loaves have an even golden color, 30-40 minutes.  Cover the loaves loosely with foil and continue to bake about 10-15 minutes more, until their bottoms are browned and the internal temperature is 190 degrees.  Remove from the oven and cool for a few minutes on a wire rack.

 And they are done.

K's looks ok I guess he tried.

Sometimes when you put in a little more effort you do get a nicer looking finished product.

I know the recipe has ingredients for a topping but the directions make no mention of it so we left it out.

Both will be going to school with K tomorrow for their Rosca de Reyes party in Spanish class.  I hope that his classmates like them because they are kind of time consuming to make.

Have you ever "bought" your kid a better grade in a class?

Animal Family Portraits

G and I just read our second book to review.

This one is called Animal Family Portraits by Becky Lam.  You can get this wonderful book for $3.99 on amazon here.

It is a picture book without any more reading than the names of the animals.

G says:  I like that book so much.

We liked that there were so many cute animals.

The group shown on the cover is Duck + Beaver = Platypus Baby.

The Animal + Animal = Baby is all it says on the page before the picture.

Some of the animal names are hard for young readers (and moms) to pronounce.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Discover Christmas

G and I probably should have done this before Christmas but we just ran out of time so we are doing it now lol.

The Book G is reviewing is called Discover Christmas.  You can get this book for $2.99 on Amazon here.  It is a level 3 reader book.

G and I give this book 4 stars.

G says:  I like how it gives you activities and stuff to do to get ready for Christmas.

I think as a parent I like that it asks the child questions to get them involved in what they are reading.  I also like that at the end of the book there are activities like looking up the definitions of the key words in the book.

G says:  I didn't like that it doesn't tell us what to do if we don't have a fireplace.  We always put ours on the couch on Christmas eve and Santa fills them and hangs them on our bedroom door knobs so me and K have something to play with while we wait for everybody else to wake up.

G only struggled with 2 words in this book and they were nativity and relatives.  Using the context of the book he figured out what they meant but had trouble pronouncing them every time they were repeated.

We are putting this book on our save list to read again next Christmas.

Simplicity

I got a long standing unfinished knitting project done today!!!

The pattern is called Simplicity and it is in the book Toe-up 2-at-a-Time socks by Melissa Morgan-Oaks.

I started these socks on August 1, 2011.  They were actually intended for a guy who is now my ex-husband and I suppose that is why I let them sit for so long lol.  The yarn is Knit Picks Stroll in Black.

The pattern has a slip stitch rib and an eye of partridge heel.  I really like the look of the socks but being a 2 row repeat and being all black they were very boring to do.

I am just glad that I finally got them done and I can now work on something more fun and colorful.

D,Z, and I treated ourselves out to lunch at Denny's today and when we were getting a bottle ready for Z before we left she decided to help herself to the things in the fridge.

I have now made it 4 days without a cigarette and it still sucks.  I go back to work tomorrow so that is going to be a real challenge but I can do this. I suppose this is how I feel today.

With not smoking I do find that I have much more time to knit so that is a good thing.

G has 2 book reviews to get done for tomorrow so keep an eye out for those.

Z Sweater

I finished Z's sweater today.  It is a 2T so it won't fit until next winter but it is done anyway.  Ok and it got some yarn out of my rather large yarn stash that I need to work on lol.

With the boys gone this weekend I finally took the time to cut apart G's new calendar.

The only reason we bought it is because he has a thing for Monster Trucks and it was a cheap way to get posters.

He is going to be super excited when he gets home.

He now is well on his way to a Monster Truck bedroom.  I think the Easter Bunny might bring him Monster Jam sheets lol.

So because I got Z's sweater done I started D's birthday socks.  I have about a month to get them done so I need to get going on them.

I should buy him a different color next time because this is his third pair that I have made for him and this is the third blue pair lol.

Today is my third day without a smoke and I am starting to falter a little bit.  I can get through this I know it.

Z Ice Box

It was just Z and I at home today because the boys are with their dad and D had to work.

While she was napping I made some progress on her sweater.  She is so awesome to knit for because she seems to like everything I make for her.  I am not done with the sweater yet but she had to try it on.

I still can't find my camera charger so I am stuck with crappy cell phone pictures.  I got a better sweater pic but she is blurred in it.

We also stopped into my work today because I wanted to change my direct deposit stuff.  I am in the process of changing banks to have my checking and savings in the same bank as my car loan for convenience sake.

So Z just had to check out the mini ice box we have in the office.

It is a Z size box lol.

Hopefully I find my charger soon so I can get pics of out trip blankets because I am caught up on them and ready to start the 2015 squares.  Ok and this sweater when I finish it up tomorrow hopefully.

Oh and as of right now I have made it 47 and a half hours without a smoke.  I am so proud of myself right now that I treated D and Z out to Taco Bell for dinner.

Day 1 Success

I have survived day one with success.  I now have 23 hours without smoking under my belt.  I even went for a drive and didn't have one and I thought that would be the hardest part.

What I am doing is the patch.  Not the name brand I am too cheap for that crap I am doing the Walmart brand lol.

These with some help with the oral thing which I am chewing gum like it is going out of style is what helped me today.  Yup thats right Stride Sour Patch kids gum in the red flavor.

I would say I saved myself $7,50 by not buying and smoking a pack but...

Yup thats right I still have 4 packs left from the carton I bought before Christmas.  So as you can see I am serious about quitting this time.  I even showed them to D and have left them on the counter as a reminder to myself and my family that these are no longer going to be a vice of mine.

I will throw them away eventually but for right now they are going to be a temptation so when I go back to work on Monday I can believe that I can work at gas stations and be around them and not be tempted to buy them.

Here is a pic of one of my biggest motivators to do this and succeed.

Yup when I make it a year I am totally going to spend the $50 to buy her this truck that she wants.

If you want to know how I am doing throughout the day or join me in the quitting journey I am using the #NoSmoke2015

What is the hardest thing you have ever done?  This is mine obviously.
